The Emmys Letdown Of Kerry Washington

So as everyone knows the Biggest letdown of the Emmys was Kerry Washington's Loss! I for one was thoroughly upset and slightly pissed!. I for one was excited and hopeful for her winning this historic honor. Here is my thoughts on the events up to & after !

so it got me thinking about viewership

Ratings

Homeland drew an all-time high 1.73 million total viewers with its 10 pm bow, up 60 percent from its series debut and representing the pay cabler’s most watched Season 2 premiere ever. For the night, Homeland amassed 2.07 million viewers.Homeland’s second season finale delivered 2.3 million viewers, with 2.7 million for the night, hitting another series high.
Homeland had a 35% increase over the Season 1 finale last December.

Scandal premiered its second season also up to a 2.2 18-49 rating from last year's 2.0 premiere rating.U.S. viewers(million) 6.74In its second season finale, ABC’s red-hot Scandal delivered the series most-watched telecast ever and tied a series high in Adults 18-49  for the 2nd week running.  The show also achieved new all-time highs across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) The season finished as the #1 TV series in its slot on each of its last 16 first-run broadcasts

Scandal spiked over its year-ago first season finale in Total Viewers(+25%) and Adults 18-49 (+39%).

The Numbers don't lie!( Courtesy of L.A Times, Entertainment Weekly & Zap2 it). So you can see clearly that people and the critics were enjoying Scandals rise.So all the ducks were in a row from a heavily successful 2nd season,  for Emmy nomination submissions (June 1, 2012 - May 31, 2013 , I looked into it Lol ) For one, I was definite sure that Kerry was going to be in it to win it

The Nomination
I called it! :-) I was uber excited! Her being the 2nd African American behind Cicely Tyson in 1995 was amazing. For her to follow in the footsteps of a Dihann Carroll for being a lead actress in a drama(which i mentioned in my video State Of Black Entertainment ) which was 30yrs ago. This history alone was enough to get you rooting for her, even if you didn't watch it. But look at her competition
Vera Farmiga, “Bates Motel” (A&E)
Michelle Dockery, “Downton Abbey” (PBS)
Claire Danes, “Homeland” (Showtime)
Robin Wright, “House of Cards” (Netflix)
Elizabeth Moss, “Mad Men” (AMC)
Connie Britton, “Nashville” (ABC)
As Vera & Robin are both in new shows in their 1st season  it couldn't have gone to them that rarely happens (unless your Claire UGH! lol) Michelle has been here twice before and It's a British show( no shade lol ). It could be Elizabeth's time as Mad Men is slowly fading and same could be said for Connie in Nashville. So that left the potential clash battle of Kerry & Claire. She was the only African American in the category with theses legends proceeding her. With her amazing weekly performance and solid numbers and reviews of the show. We just knew that she was a shoo in,but you never know with Awards!

Emmy Night!
So Kerry looked amazing in her Marchesa

Then this happened when Supporting Actor in A Drama Category was being presented

A Beautiful Moment!

So about and hour later it was that time. Jimmy Fallon presented Lead Actress In A Drama  to......

                                                            Claire Danes for Homeland

My Initial Shock & Dissapointment
Now Just a disclaimer. I'm not hating on her. I'm not denying her talent or her performance on Homeland. It's a really gripping show and she is awesome on it! But the chick won already! Lol 'm not trying to be funny but I'm serious. She won last year and it was her first season which was great, but this was Kerry's time! Also in her speech, no recognizing everyone in the category especially Kerry!(yes I'm being petty right now, but it's warranted! Lol )

With all that we know fans of the show, Kerry, the Emmy know what it was. This was an historical occasion and a great year in TV for African Americans. Besides Kerry we have Tyler Perry show doing good. Done Cheadle nominated for his how House of lies.Steel magnolias remake which was a ratings Hit had Alfre Woodard give an stellar performance as Ouiser! Both Don & Alfre were nominated. The list goes on. We couldn't get the important one if anything!

I feel like why did the Emmys even feel the need to have that amazing moment with Kerry &  Dihann.  From what Ms. Carroll was talking about, you understood things in perspective. You understood where we are in TV from a few years back. If you knew good and well that history wouldn't, wasn't and might not happen this year then why setup it up that way. I just felt dare i say tricked.

Twitter Backlash
Child everyone was too through. Twitter was a blaze with thoughts of shock & dismay to Kerry Losing. I even threw my phone down as i was watching it.I wouldn't' t believe the Robbery.

The is the biggest whitewashed production ever. You robbed Kerry Washington of an award that she deserved.Go to fucking hell!
Even her cast-mate Columbus short knew what it was
  1. Robbed. Robbed I tell you. ROBBED. is without question the MOST OUTSTANDING. Well see you next year Emmys.

I couldn't agree more Brotha!

Final Thoughts
Then on Monday I saw Kerry's tweet I realized It's an honor to be nominated (which i pray for) and that it can only get better from here!

I love you Kerry!!!!! I know you better win that Damn Thing Next year . After your Golden Globe & SAG awards! :-) I always think ahead Boo :-)

The British Are Coming, For DIANA!

So the Brits have spoken on the new Diana biopic starring Naomi Watts and it's not good

Diana is a biopic about the love affair between the Princess of Wales (Naomi Watts) and heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). The drama, which is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, covers the last two years of Diana's life, before her death in a car crash in Paris

This is some reviews from British press

The Mirror's David Edwards described the film as "a cheap and cheerless effort that looks like a Channel 5 mid-week matinee"He awarded the film one star out of five.

Christopher Tookey's one-star review in the Daily Mail brands the film as "terribly, terribly dull".

Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw writes "I hesitate to use the term 'car crash drama', "But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death."

Wow! I know they hated Mary Poppins but this is crazy. I'm thinking that it most likely has to be script related or maybe Naomi Watts(an Aussie) portrayal .But for whatever reason, what i watched in the trailer was amazing. From someone who knew who she was to the world and all the turmoil with the royal family, this movie gives another side i knew nothing about

I think the good thing about the film is it seems to shy away from the typical general Royal Family Drama and focuses more on her life after it and her transition into Dodi Fayed and her untimely death. I think the American critics will eat it up because of Naomi watts performance. after her stellar performance in last year's The Impossible( which was amazing, She would've won if not for J Law) I'm sure she will once again grace the Oscars and hopefully Win!

But time will tell.It opens in Theaters in the U.S Nov 1st  P.S check out The trailer!

My 2013 Emmy's Red Carpet Recap!

So as the Emmys Red Carpet has been rolled up a week now. Let's take a look at my Hits & Misses.

 Amanda in  Peet in  Erdem

Who's this you ask ? That's Amanda Peet...... Yeah didn't recognize her either. Judging from her young ingenue last year, maybe that's why she decided to go the couture bad girl  route. Unfortunately This goth style dress would've more been suited for a Kristen Stewart type. Sorry Amanda!

                                                Anna Faris in Monique Lhuillier

Ana..I loved her Dress! Monique is one of the Best , but That Hair! It's the Emmys and your got a new show to promote. Now is not the time for a full  on WIG! Lmao I  love how one site Laineygossip.com caught it too:Worst Emmys Makeup & Hair: Anna Faris Lol (Hey Lainey!)

                                                                  Lily Rabe in Vionnet

It looks like Sister Mary Eunice is still possessed lol . Except it was a stylist that passed the demonic dress onto her  Lol  I wasn't a fan! The dress is like American Horror Story, the mix of Good & Evil!

Now The Hits! :-)
                                                     Anna Gun in Romona Keveza

Kerry Washington in Marchesa
So honestly I didn't like it at first glance. But 2nd glance and learning it's an Off The Runway Piece
                                                                          i got it! Lol
As this isn't her first runway Marchesa lol

According to the Huffington Post:"The cream-and-white hued design with a hint of gold lace and tons of flower appliques is from the fashion house's Spring 2014 collection, which means it's fresh off the New York Fashion Week runway and won't be available to mere mortals until next year."
Ahhh Perfection from the "World's Best Dressed Woman"!!

I can't wait until next year , to see who outdoes themselves or who doesn't do anything! :-)

Olivia Pope is Going to get an EMMY!!!

Thursday was the day i have been waiting for, since first season was over of SCANDAL!

KERRY WASHINGTON IS AN EMMY NOMINEE!!!!!!!!

Kerry as Olivia Pope was Groundbreaking in my opinion and the fact that the Emmy and Golden Globes passed her up last year (which had me mad especially that they gave Connie Britton a nomination and Scandal was on before it!, but whatever LOL) was silly. But all good thing must come to those who wait. And yes we all did wait. Kerry even went ahead and got married Lol

But Emmy morning i knew she would be called. I even had a nice Instagram exchange with a girl who knew it was going to happen to (shout-out to Angeliice On Instagram!) I saw the list online and i was like yess! I was at them time dropping off my boo at the subway, so i knew what i was doing when i got in. I went IN Lmao I was so excited for her and for the fact that she was finally being recognized for being the only black woman on primetime since Diahann Carroll in Julia and the first nominee since Cicely Tyson in 1994.

*SHAMELESS PLUG TIME***
I actually discussed in in my YouTube video about Black Hollywood. Check it out Here:

After speaking to my sister last night, she asked who were the the nominees and i told her. When she heard Claire Danes (Who's work i admire) she was like OH that's tough, she's good in HOMELAND! I said NOPE Kerry is getting it! It's her time! And DAMN it, it is! SCANDAL is like the best drama on TV and it's at the helm of a African American Female character running !@#$. Plus i think Claire will be more than happy with her 2 Emmys & Golden Globes! This is time for history to be had & made and by gosh it will be

My New Fav Web-Series!

So for those of you who are looking for a new black gay show to watch, FREEFALL is the answer.

 Description:

Xavier, Cameron and Nico continue to navigate a messy living situation when one by one the roommates get pulled into the dark side of Atlanta life. Watch as they fight to stay afloat and keep their personal relationships from taking them under...before the streets do.For these guys, their lives are enhanced, not defined, by their sexuality. Follow them as they share a living situation that becomes complicated both in and outside of their beds.

Sounds good doesn't it.? Plus they are all real looking dudes. Not that there is anything wrong with the Gurlz Lol but it's good to have a show with some masculinity in it! So add that and
It's setup. It's not really like other series in the way that it's shot and storyline stricture, so that's what has me hooked on it.  Maybe it's because it's filmed down south which gives it that slightly urban southern grittiness i dunno but either way it's not the single guys in NYC or LA, and that's alright with me!

anyhow , all I'm saying is check it out!

Website: Offical FREEFALL Website

This new web-series which has been on YouTube for a min now is starting to gain some traction in the community as well as mainstream media starting to notice. It was just mentioned in EBONY Magazine's article about Black Gay Media.

I'm Graduating, Yessssss :-) !!!!!

So as of  Earlier today, I can Officially say I will be a graduate in  BMCC, City University of New York Graduating class of 2013!!!

I passed Bio (Thank You Jesus) with a grade higher than expected( a C, y'all know me Lol)  as my Term long mantra was  " I just wanna pass so Just Give me my D" Lmao.

It's been a  long tumultuous semester of Genotypes, Molecules, Digestion mixed with, Langston Hughes & Moliere. I must say this semester has been a crazy one, and I'm glad it's over. But I'm saddened that I'm finally at the end of my BMCC road. A place i started back on '06, left in '07, then came back to finish in '12. I've learned alot and have growed alot as well. So i know that i should be ready for the next chapter in life. whether it be getting my B.A from City College (one plan) or just hitting the pavement harder than ever and landing my first Big Break (Goal#1) wel will see. But let me get through this week of graduation prep as my school is stingy with tickets! Lol I'm now forced to go and wait at school on Thursday to see if there are any extra tickets. If It ain't one thing it's the next!  Lol

My BMCC Theatre PRIDE!!!

BMCC garnishes Kennedy Center Nominations for the 2nd time!
For the 2nd time my school Borough Of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) has been nominated in the Kennedy Center College Theatre Festival for Their production on Moliere’s The Misanthrope .They were previous nominated for Woyzeck also directed by Director(and one of my fav professors) Alkis  Papoutsis

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of College Theater in the United States.

The KCACTF honors excellence of overall production and offers student artist’s individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing, and design.
The Misanthrope ran the end of April and received great reviews including great commendations from the BMCC president & Speech & Communications Deputy Chair Sandra S.  Poster who had this to say to Director Alkis  Papoutsis:
My congratulations to your cast and crew for the wonderful production of the Misanthrope that I had the pleasure of seeing last evening. It was a delight -- funny, clever, original and wonderfully entertaining.  You lit up the night! You bring honor to the department and the college.”

The  nominees are :
          Best Actor & Actress
Maria Hernandez as Celeste" The It Girl" & Christopher Hernandez as Carmine (Frankie's Best bud)

Craig Watson As Frankie "The ladies Man"

Benny Avacedo as Tone "The Poet"

Katie Wright as Annmarie Russo (Celeste's BFF)

Stage Manager
Emma Ruopp

Why this does has so much significance you ask? Well……

I was a member of the cast J Lol

The Kennedy Center representative that came to our show said he was overwhelmed with the display of talent and it was hard to choose. We may be a community college in NYC but trust; we can roll with the big boys. Our nominations are proof in the pudding! To be one of the shows even to be considered is an honor and having some of the cast shows that BMCC theatre department is doing something right! This makes me so proud to be a soon to be BMCC alumni

The Oscars & Precious 4yrs later: Blessing or Curse?

So I was wondering to myself the other night, what can an Oscar nomination do for a black film? Precious which wasn’t a box office smash , but set some records(the highest grossing picture to open in fewer than 100 theaters). It received 80 awards (including 2 Oscars) & 137 nominations, has it impacted anyone’s career? My biggest wonder was with the film’s most acclaimed performer MoNique. Since Her Award season domination, we haven’t seen her. Is that because of the Oscar? And if so why have the other members of the Precious family had some moderate successes.

Lee Daniels

Since his Best Director Oscar Nomination, Mr. Daniels has been working his tail off. But Hollywood is somewhat biting at his bait. Not having any projects until Last year’s The Paperboy (which I thoroughly enjoyed). It premiered at Cannes, was nominated for Best Film and received the longest sustained standing ovation of the festival at 16 minutes. But it was met with mixed reviews (there and in the USA). His upcoming summer historical drama The Butler tells the true story of Eugene Allen a White House Butler for 8 terms starring Oprah, Forest Whitaker, Robin Williams & etc, is already gaining buzz
Oscar History
Second black person to earn a Best Director nomination
First black director to earn a Best Picture nomination.

Gabouney Sidibe

Since her Golden Globe, SAG & Oscar nominations & NAACP Image Award win for Best Actress; Hollywood hasn't been calling, only for the mediocre. She co-starred in the Eddie Murphy driven comedy Tower Heist which was a box office dud. She was in the indie Yelling To The Sky with Zoe Kravitz, and last year’s British crime comedy Seven Psychopaths. But the small screen has been friendlier, which is interesting. She’s a series regular on the SHO series The Big C, she hosted Saturday Night Live and she’s to be on the next season of the FX hit series American Horror Story.
Oscar History: Second black actress to receive a lead Academy Award nomination for a debut film performance following Diana Ross

Geoffrey S.  Fletcher

After winning his Best Screenplay Oscar, Geoffrey went right on to his next project. In 2010 he started shooting on his directorial debut Violet & Daisy due out next month. As well as collaboration on a film re-creation of the 1971 Attica state prison rebellion.

Oscar History: First black person to win a screenplay Academy Award.

      MoNique

After her Golden Globe, SAG, NAACP Image Award & Oscar glory for Best Supporting Actress, she kind of faded in the background (which upset me!)  After her ferocious performance, I like the rest of us were sure she would be booking roles left and right! She still had The Mo’Nique Show on BET (The first African American Woman to host a late night Talk show) until 2011 in which it was cancelled. And as far as her film presence there was no sign of her anywhere. Not as much as a cameo or TV spot. Then the Oprah scandal involving her brother and  her landlord issue we begin to wonder if it’s the Oscar curse !( For those who don’t know it’s an urban legend so to speak that once someone wins an Oscar (particularly women) either their career takes off or just fizzle. )

In Mo’Nique’s defense, she revealed Tuesday in an interview that her M.I.A was due to working on her personal 3 year weight loss journey. She has dropped 82 pounds and is feeling great. I commend her, but find intriguing. Gabby was the one battling the pressures of Hollywood’s constant image obstacles but she still has persevered to be landing gigs. But none the less MoNique is an amazing actress!! After wetting our appetite in Precious, we want more!

Oscar History: She is the Fourth Black actress to win in the category.

From the looks of everybody it seems to have improved but not by much. It seems that gaining critical acclaim is a blessing, but it doesn't guarantee immediate Movies, TV shows etc. It just establishes that you have the goods, but it might able awhile before we see you again. Unless you’re blessed like Hilary Swank and you get Oscars Twice in 5 years! But being the first black director to earn a Best Picture nomination & First black person to win a screenplay Academy Award, and Second film to feature black nominees for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress  Isn't half bad! Don’t you think?
